We got sick of hearing that female athletes are smarter than male athletes, so we decided to check it out. We took our sample from the largest available population, the track teams. The girl’s track team has about 80 girls, so we randomly selected ten of them. The boy’s track team has about 50 boys, so we randomly selected eight of them. We found that the boys have a higher mean GPA than the girls, a 3.38 to 3.05. This shows a significant diference in the mean GPA. However, we had to check if this it is reasonable to claim these results for the entire team. The normality test gave us results that allowed us to make that assumption. The results only cover the track teams though, so they do not represent all athletes. Nor does GPA depict how smart a person is.
We decided to check on other similar studies. Several universities did similar studies, and all had different results. The general concensus is that all athletes do about the same, while female non-athletes do better than everyone else. We concluded that the boy’s track team gets better grades than the girl’s track team. Unfortunately this does not cover all athletes so a larger sample from multiple sports would be needed in order to reach a better conclusion.
