Purpose of the Study
I have decided to do my project over the difference in gender wages. This subject has interested me because I am currently a working teenager at the local Dairy Queen. I have been working there for a number of years now, and I just recently asked and received my first raise. I have also recently discovered that the only people with raises are mainly males. Also, the managers tend to make a substantial amount of money in weekly wages compared to the lesser level employees. Many of my female co-workers have complained about the store owner no being fair when it comes to wages. They have asked me about my raise, but I decided to not say anything about it because it did not want any trouble. The purpose of the study is to discover if there really is a gender wage gap.
Abstract
Because I work at a local fast food resturant, I was interested to see if there was a gender gap in the weekly incomes of both males and females. I have found past research that finds a strong gender gap in wages for males and females in full time jobs. I had sent out surveys to begin my study on if there is a significant wage difference between males and females at North Olmsted High School. With the 150 surveys that I had sent out, only about 51 of them were actually useful. I had some non-response bias, as well as some survey had some rediculous amounts of money being made. For example, someone thought it would be very funny to imply that he or she was a professional assassin. I decided not to include that survey in my study. In addition, I decided not to include surveys of males and females that did not have jobs because if one did not have a job, the survey would be useless to the study. I split up the surveys between the males and females, and found that I had 27 useful female surveys and 23 useful male surveys. The sample sizes were too small to take a z-test, therefore, I took a two sample t-test. I checked my assumptions and went through with the study. The test gave me a p-value of 0.691. With a p-value that was that high, I failed to reject my null hypothesis at any level of significance. Extrapolating my data could have improved my results to be more accurate. However, with the population and sample used, I found that there was no gender gap in wages at North Olmsted High School. In fact, the mean weekly incomes of females was higher than the those of the males.
