Background Research
The fast food industry has transformed American society. Multiple studies have been conducted on the growing industry. Some of theses studies deal with the quality of food, the highest grossing restaurant, and the types of toys offered.
We are searching for information on the gender distribution of McDonald’s customers. Our studies only included dine in customers. Most studies completed have included both the drive through and dine in customers.
According to quantcast, more females eat McDonalds than males. Fifty-two percent of females eat McDonalds opposed to the forty-eight percent of males. The most common customers are under the age of 18, making up twenty-two percent of McDonald’s customers.
People with children eat McDonalds more often than those without children. Persons who make between fifty to one hundred thousand dollars a year eat McDonalds more than persons falling under any other salary.
The higher the education level, the less likely a person is to eat McDonalds.
According to a survey conducted by Ayse Özfer Özcelik, Lale Sariye Akan and Metin Saip Sürücüoglu of Ankara University in their study titled An Evaluation of Fast-Food Preferences According to Gender.
Most interestingly, men are found at fast food places with friends more often than females, whereas females are found far more often with children or family. Another interesting note is that females who are found at the McDonalds are more likely to be unemployed than their male counterparts.
Perhaps most relevant to our study, females prefer burger shops to other fast food places, whereas men will often prefer to go to other fast-food places. Since McDonalds is typically considered a burger shop, we can reasonably infer that the results of the study imply that females prefer McDonalds and similar restaurants to other fast-food restaurants.
Pewsocialtrends observed that in general more men eat fast food than women. This study was not based on solely McDonalds. Forty-seven percent of men eat fast food weekly as opposed to the thirty-seven percent of women. Seventy-one percent of men eat out at least once a week.
Sixty-two percent of women eat out at least once a week. This study does not specify where the populations are eating out. The most common reason people eat junk food is because it is more convenient. Other reasons include that it is cheaper, heavily advertised, and tastes better.
This study was obtained from 2, 250 phone interviews.
According to Lexicalist.com, 51.1% of all McDonald’s customers are males. Naturally, 48.9% of all McDonald’s customers are female. Interestingly, this contradicts several other surveys.
The Lexicalist also provides a breakdown based on geographic location and socioeconomic information, which tells us that Ohio has one of the highest McDonald’s concentrations in the nation.
Finally, the conclusion
From the statistical data found through other studies, we can pretty much conclude that any variety of factors can cause the fluctuation of men or women in the store and that from these studies, the gender issue is inconclusive
