Abstract

The reason we chose to test for a correlation between a student’s hair color and grade point average was to determine whether “Blonde Jokes” are based on proper validity.  Most people view the blonde culture as dumber than normal because of the blonde jokes.  We thought that by testing between hair color and grade point average, that we could determine whether blondes are actually dumber than people with red, black, or brown hair.

We gathered background information from a few different websites by searching on www.Google.com.  We found a few different articles that performed such studies between the hair color and grade point average of students.

After gathering the background research, we made our survey which asked two questions- “What is your 3rd Quarter G.P.A.?” and “What is your natural hair color?”. We then compiled a random sample of 160 students from North Olmsted High School, using Minitab.  The population of our study was all of the students currently attending North Olmsted High School.

We then obtained the schedules of all 160 students from the Guidance Department and wrote down the student’s teachers, so that we could pass our surveys out.  We worked on the various parts of our web page while we awaited the arrival of our surveys.  After 5 days, we received 127 of the 160 surveys that we sent out.  We entered the raw data into Minitab as we received the surveys.  We then ran a Chi-square test to determine if there actually was a correlation between North Olmsted High School students’ hair color and grade point average.  However, there were some expected cell counts under 5, so we were not able to come to a valid conclusion.
