Conclusion

After running our chi-squared two-way table, our p-value (0.001) was less than our alpha value (0.05).  Therefore, we can reject our null hypothesis in favor of our alternative hypothesis, that there is variation of academic preference between males and females.  We can say that boys prefer math & science and girls prefer English & social studies.

All of our assumptions have been met for this test.  First, our sample was randomly selected from the population, students currently attending North Olmsted High School.  Second, all of our expected cell counts were at least 5, which is required for a Chi-Squared test.  Since all of our assumptions have been met, our conclusion is valid.

Our primary purpose for running this study was to see if the stereotype that boys like math & science and girls like English & social studies.  Most of the research done on this topic has been directed toward elementary school students.  With this study, we can say that this stereotype can also apply to high school students.
