Abstract

I was intersted in seeing if more than half of the students in the high school that I know, are religiously affiliated. I had previously thought that less kids around my age are joined in a religion. Before starting my research I needed background information to see if others might have done something similar to what I am about to do. I searched google with religious affiliation and on top of the page I clicked on the first source. That was the Pew forum on religious and public life project, a reliable source that has been keeping track of the religous landscape of America by conducting a census every 10 years. They ask many questions that are very detailed than what I am about to do. Their research is very broad and very reliable. I also found another website that researches the religious affiliation of people who were famous, a interesting yet confusing website. Then I began to work on my study. First, to test my theory I wanted a sample of 75 students from NOHS and ask them if they believe in a religion. I used minitab to randomly sample 75 students out of 1292 students enrolled in NOHS. Then I find their schedule to see what time would be appropriate for me to send my post it note labeled surveys to them. When I recieve most of the surveys back, I decide to test the surveys using a 1 proportion Z test to see if less than half of the students in NOHS are not religously affiliated. From the test I found a p-value of 0.024 which is less than the significance level 0.05. Which means that I can reject the null hypothesis and accept the alternative hypothesis. I have sufficient evidence to prove that less than half of the population is not religously affiliated. In other words, more than half of the population of students in NOHS is religiously affiliated. I came to the conclusion that I was wrong to think most teenagers my age aren't religiously affiliated.
