Streaks

We started our research by going to www.google.com and searching "average number of Snapchat streaks kept by students." This particular search did not yield any relevant information. We figured this search may have been too specific, so we searched "average number of Snapchat streaks," omitting the word student. We continued additional searches including “Snapchat streak count,” “Snapchat statistics,” and “Snapchat studies.” The more we searched, the more vague our searches became. We found a few articles with somewhat relevant information to our study, but nothing we found was helpful in terms of the actual question at hand.

This was the first page we found, and it led us to find the number of snaps users collectively receive in a day - on average about 400 million snaps are sent and received. Although this page helped us in finding how many individual snaps are sent and received, it did not help us find how many streaks an average student kept. Therefore, this article was mostly irrelevant to the actual study at hand.

This was the next page we visited, and it had slightly different information than other websites. This article discussed how much teens value yet despise the app. Often times, maintaining a Snapchat streak can mean the beginning or end of a friendship. Teens feel obligated to continue a streak even if they’re not fond of a person, just because breaking a streak has a negative effect in today’s society. This article still provided no information about our study of interest. Rather, it gave a brief explanation as to why students may keep so many streaks.

It includes screenshots of teens conversing in attempts to preserve the streak, and also has quotes from students themselves. However, it is still unrevealing as to how many streaks per person. This, like the previous cite, had more to do with why students may keep a streak, rather than actual statistics about how many are kept.

A student at Granite City High School asked a few of her classmates: how many streaks they kept, how long was their longest streak, and what was most difficult about keeping streaks. She compiled data about how many streaks the students maintained, however did not compare to the number to any average or mean, as we intend to do. Also, there was no indication as to whether her sample was randomly chosen. She did not mention what her purpose of the survey was, so it simply could have been her questioning her friends. One question from this study was similar to ours. However, the overall idea was not comparable to ours, as no average was found for the student body.

In conclusion, we determined that no study identical to ours has previously been conducted. Although we found somewhat relevant information about Snapchat streaks, nothing was similar to the actual question at hand. There were no studies about how many streaks the average high school student maintained. Hence, we must rely on our own data, as there was minimal background information to be found.
