The Study

For our sampling method we acquired a list of every student enrolled in NOHS from an Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet contained every student's last name, first name, grade level, and gender. We then sorted the entire data set into male and female by using the Data>Sort option in Excel. We then posted our lists into Minitab. After we posted the lists of all NOHS males and all NOHS females we used Minitab to randomly generate a list of 25 males and 25 females for our samples. The way we used the software was by clicking Calc>Random Data> Sample from Columns option. Then we typed the sample size in the Number of Rows to Sample box. This allowed the software to randomly generate a list of 25 males and 25 females, which is what we used for our sample.

Boys: 10 A, 13 I

Girls: 4 A, 19 I

Proportions for boys: 0.435 A and 0.565 I

Proportions for girls: 0.174 A and 0.826 I

Total Proportions: 0.304 A and 0.696 I

Hypothesized: 0.45 A and 0.55 I


We did a z test for one proportion since we wanted to look at the sample proportion of android users and compare it to our hypothesized value. We looked at p < 0.45 because our values seemed to show that they were much lower than 0.45.

Assumptions: 1. Sample is random
                         2. The population is normal because np = 20.7  >10 and n(1-p) = 25.3  > 10.
                         3. n is less than 10% of the population.

z = -1.99

p-value = 0.024
