Texting vs. GPA

 Abstract

Many educators believe that cell phones hinder writing in a school environment, so we wanted to find out if this was true.

Our  study was conducted to decide if there is a relationship between student's GPAs who do text versus those who do not. A random sample of North Olmsted High School students were surveyed asking whether they text and what their cumulative GPA is. The survey consisted 68 males and females of various grades at North Olmsted High school.

Prior to our test there was extremely little background information which would help indicate what results we could expect. The few similar studies we did find though indicated that electronic devices in general hindered students

Purpose

The purpose of our project is to see if there is a relationship between the amount of time spent by students texting and their cumulative GPA. We decided to choose this problem to test because we realize the growth of texting in everyday high school students' lives. With the advancement of technology, greater amounts of time are spent texting or playing on phones rather than studying or doing homework. WE are curious to see if the growth in overall texting during school is related to a student's cumulative GPA.
