Tank Tops in Schools

Background Research

Although not many studies have exactly tested the appropriateness of wearing thin strapped tank tops or sleeveless shirts in school, similar studies have been done. To start, we typed in “reasons to wear tank tops in school” into google’s search engine. We then typed in “reasons against wearing tank tops in school” into google’s search engine. We found that many people took particular stances on the issue of wearing tank tops at school, but few studies were done on the subject matter. Therefore, we researched “surveys on dress codes and uniforms in schools” in google. We found that the study that is most similar to our study is that of the use of school uniforms. Parents seem to take the position of wanting a dress code, whereas students do not. From a parents point of view, it would be less costly to buy their children school uniforms than to pay for high-priced brand name clothing. Another reason school uniforms are supported is that “experts believe that children who wear school uniforms do better academically. This is due to a myriad of reasons, including not wasting time in the morning getting ready, lack of distractions, and a more formal studying environment.” After seeing one side of those who are for school uniforms, we decided to google “reasons against school uniforms.” We found that students oppose having a strict dress code because it restricts one’s self-expression. Self-expression is believe to be very important to a student’s development in life. Insisting on school uniforms forces students to conform with the rest of their classmates. There also seemed to be much debate on the topic of clothing as a distraction. So, we googled “tank tops as distraction in schools.” Those results showed that some believe that clothing that shows bare shoulders can be distracting in the classroom. On the other hand, others would disagree completely because they feel that they are appropriate to wear in school. To be more specific to our study, we googled “are tank tops appropriate in school.” One researcher believes that “If you let them wear tank tops next it's spaghetti straps and then tube tops. They think that girls will just wear less and it's inappropriate.” However, many students believe that wearing sleeveless shirts in school allows them to to be comfortable in the warmer weather.
