The Study

For our study we viewd a roster of all of the students at North Olmsted High School. Upon viewing this we opened the roster in Minitab and randomly sampled from the columns. We sampled 100 boys and 100 girls. We then went to the office and found the schedules of those sampled and sent surveys to them. In the survey we asked the students gender, grade, GPA, and the average number of detentions that they received per month. We sent the surveys out and upon receiving them we entered the data into Minitab. We did two two sample T tests. We checked the assumptions and we found that they were met. We had a sample size of over 30, so the sample was sufficiently large. Also the data was from two distinc populations males and females. Also the populations where indpendent of eachother. The GPA or number of detentions of a girl does not have an affect on the GPA or number of detentions received by a boy. Seeing that the assumptions were met we continued on to the test. In the first test we wanted to see if there was a difference between the mean GPA of males and the mean GPA of females. The null hypothesis was that the GPA of males was equal to the GPA of females. The alternative hypothesis was that the GPA of males was not equal to the GPA of females. We set alpha as .05 and did the test on Minitab. We got a P value of .751. We th

en did another two sample t test to see if the mean average number of detentions received by males was different from the mean number of detentions received by females. We checked the assumptions again. The two samples where from distinct populations and they where independent from eachother. The sample size was also sufficiently large. We defined the null hypothesis as the Number of detentions received by males being equal to the number of detentions received by females. We then defined the alternative hypothesis as the mean number of detentions received by males being equal to the mean number of detentions received by females. We set alpha as .05 once again and we proceeded on wtih our test. We got a p value of .884.
