Your GPA and Detentions

Statement of the problem

We wanted to see if there was an association between school detentions received by males and females and their corresponding GPAs. The motivation for this study was an interest in the student body and possible issues surrounding our peers. One issue concerning high school students is their grades and one thing that seems to affect GPA is delinquency which can be noted by the number of detentions (in school) a student receives as they can be issued for a variety of offenses (truancy, insubordination, texting, etc.). Another point of interest would be to examine whether the results would be skewed towards males or females. We are trying to see if delinquency (shown by number of detentions) and GPA have a negative correlation.
