Discussion
Our study had several weaknesses such as confounding variables and bias. One deficiency in our study was the way our statement was worded. Apparently writing “Answer truthfully or you will face unintended consequences” is a threat that can induce response bias. People may take the survey as a joke and answer dishonestly. This results in inaccurate information and can alter our conclusion. While randomly selecting students to survey, we came across several juniors and seniors who were unable to answer our survey questions as they attended Budsman which means that while they are students of North Olmsted High School, we cannot include them in our sample because we have no way of reaching them. This can further give us an inaccurate outcome to our study. An additional response bias is if the student does not know his/her GPA and puts an estimate. That works the same way with his/her work hours. Once again, this can skew our conclusion.
We feel comfortable extrapolating our results to all North Olmsted High School juniors and seniors. We believe that we can only extrapolate to this population because we only surveyed from this population. We cannot extrapolate the results of our study to a wider population because it will differ from other high schools. The other high schools would produce different data than what we what we received. However, if we had surveyed juniors and seniors nationwide it would be appropriate to represent our results to juniors and seniors across the country.
Several things could be done to further the work in this area. One could be to take a bigger sample. By taking a bigger sample, you would receive more accurate results. Also one can survey the after school activities or analyze another factor that could affect the data. Then one could determine if that variable has any impact on GPA.
