Background Research

Our study is to see what gender goes into bakeries more often, male or female? A variable we can’t control is a certain deal going on that may target more women, or more men. Another variable we can’t control would be bad weather that would cause more “gentleman” to leave their wives in the car, picking up the groceries for them.

We could not find a study exactly like our topic, but we did find an article on whether men or women are more likely to do the grocery shopping. A study by marketing network, Daymon Worldwide stated that men now make up 51% of grocery shoppers for all U.S. households. The study looked at 1000 males and 750 females and found that also, 78% of these primary men shoppers are responsible for all the groceries bought in their house. Most importantly, the study stated that men are 10% more likely to buy groceries for a specific purpose rather than a complete pantry restock. Also, men are more likely to save money while shopping than women, because their average amount spent on a single trip to the grocery store is $3.40 less than female shoppers. This study shows that men have obviously taken over the grocery shopping role, and for specific runs. This would imply that for our study, more men would come in to Fragapane’s.

While researching, we found another study that looked at food preferences for the genders. Although we couldn’t see the whole article, we were able to see the abstract, and get the summary of the data. Matthew M. Chaney and Nina Chan used a stratified sample of 1,005 people to show the difference in comfort food corresponding in different genders. The study supported the hypothesis that men prefer more hearty food, such as steak and potatoes, while women prefer sweets, such as ice cream or baked goods. This study shows that women prefer food that is similar to the type of food that Fragapane’s is offering, and therefore it seems likely that more women than men are going to come into the bakery.

Exploring comfort food preferences across age and gender

Even though we were unable to find a study that was done on our exact topic, we were able to access data similar to our choice of study. We can use the research we did to examine the correlation between gender and food preference, which could be a factor in our study.
