We are doing a survey for our statistics class and we would greatly appreciate it if you would take the time to fill it out. You do NOT have to put the name on it, it will be completely confidential. Please circle ONE answer for each question and return the survey to your teacher. Thank you for your time!
For our study, the population was the entire student body of North Olmsted High School. Our sampling began once we obtained a list of all the currently enrolled students in the high school. We copied and pasted all the students’ names from Excel into Minitab. We first sorted the students by gender. Then, we used the “Sample from columns” tool to obtain a random sample of 160 students—80 male and 80 female. We then alphabetized the list and printed it out.
We chose a two proportion t-test to answer the question of our study. This type of test was chosen because we wanted to see the difference between males and females and their math grade average and this type of test would show us the adequate information to answer our question. Significance Test: µ1 = the true mean math grade for females µ2 = the true mean math grade for males Hypotheses: Ho: The math grade average for females is greater than males' math grade average Ha: The math grade average for females is not greater than males' math grade average Significance Level: a =0.05 Test:
Computations: t = (2.80-2.69) - 0 / (√1.07/(69) + 1.05/(71)) Two-sample T for Grade vs Grade 2 N Mean StDev SE Mean Grade 69 2.80 1.07 0.13 Grade 2 71 2.69 1.05 0.12 T-Test of difference = 0 (vs. >): T-Value = 0.60 P-Value = 0.275 DF = 137 Conclusion: At the significance level of .05, or at any reasonable significance level, we fail to reject the null hypothesis because the p-value is greater than alpha (0.275 > 0.05). Therefore, there is insufficient evidence to say that the true math grade average for females is greater than males' math grade average.
