Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the question of are females smarter in mathematics than males.

The population was the entire student body of North Olmsted High School.  We had a random sample of 160 students – 80 male and 80 female.  Background research revealed statistics on math scores of males and females throughout the years.

Our study was an observational study because we did not manipulate any variables.  Our survey asked for the persons’ sex and their math grade average for this year.  The information that we received was then entered into Minitab and after, we were able to perform a significance test.

The data was analyzed using a two sample t-test.  The test gave us a p-value of 0.275.  The significance test was valid according to the Central Limit Theorem because our sample size was 140, which is greater than 10.  This p-value was greater than our alpha of 0.05, so we failed to reject the null hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance or at any reasonable significance level.  Therefore, there is not enough information to say that females are smarter than males in mathematics.
