Favorite Fruits
The population that we gained our sample from would be al the students who attend NOHS high school, grades 9 through 12. We first started with four different Microsoft excel sheets, all listing the names and class number of all the students in that grade. We then took the four different spread sheets and combined them into one list containing all 1606 students. After the total list was compiled we used a random number generator, provided by Minitab and got a list of 160 random student numbers. After our sample was obtained we placed the students names in alphabetic order. From there we went to guidance and found what class and period each student was in study hall and assigned them the following survey.
Sex (circle one): MALE FEMALE
Pick your favorite fruit:
Apple Orange Banana Grape Pineapple
Null Hypothesis: There is not difference in distribution of favorite fruits between males and females.
Alternative Hypothesis: There is a difference in distribution of favorite fruits between males and females.
0.002 + 0.003 +
0.026 + 0.038 +
0.158 + 0.231 +
1.289 + 1.885 +
0.158 + 0.231 = 4.023
DF = 4, P-Value = 0.403, Alpha = .05
1 cells with expected counts less than 5.0
Since our P-Value was greater than Alpha we fail to reject our null hypothesis at the .05 level of significance. There is insufficient evidence to say that there is a difference in distributions of fruit preferences between males and females.
