To begin our study we came up with the question Is there a difference in distribution between favorite fruits of males and females. We began doing research to find out if any similar studies or surveys were held to find a conclusion to this question. There were a few surveys of favorite fruits and a couple articles about the topic but there were not any studies exactly the same as ours.
After our research we collected our sample. We got a list of every student in the high school and assigned a number to each student. We then found our sample by using Minitab to do a random number generator to select 160 students. We sent our survey out to each student asking them their gender and favorite fruit (out of the 5 listed).
When our data was returned we held a chi-squared test to find if there really was a difference in the distributions. After we conducted our test we found that no, there really is no difference in fruit preferences between boys and girls. No one gender prefers one fruit more then the other gender.
Many people have heard the phrase “apples or oranges?” This phrase brought up the question “What do people really prefer, apples or oranges?” Instead of simply choosing between those 2 fruits, we decided to extend our study to 5 different responses; apples, oranges, grapes, bananas, or pineapples. After we choose our 5 fruits we decided to also test whether there would be a difference in favorite fruit preference between males and females.
