Does videogame play affect cumulative
G.P.A?
Background Research:
There have been several studies done relating regular video game play to ones GPA. According to a study done by National Bureau of Economic Research, first year student who brought video game system studied for 40 minutes less resulting into a GPA that’s .241 points lower on a 4.0 scale. The study also found that the video game system did not contribute to different levels of class attendance, partying, and study efficiency which are factors that could affect GPA. This can lead one to the conclusion that daily video game play will result in a lower GPA than if video games are not played. http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2007-09-18-videogame-GPA_N.htm
Summary of Data: First year students who brought a game system to school recieved an average of .241 G.P.A points less than students who did not.
Another study done by Dr. Iman Sharif who compared ones academic performance on a scale of “below average” to “excellent.” After he ran the experiment his results showed that there was a clear cut in the results indicating that the more games played and T.V. watched resulted in lower grades. http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2006/10/7880.ars
Summary of Data: Dr. Iman Sharif's study concludes that watching T.V and playing videogames resulted in a lower grade on his performance scale of "below average" all the way to excellent.
There has been a study which analyzed the correlation of video game usage and cumulative GPA and SAT scores. This study was found in “Cyberpsychology and Behavior”, Volume 10, Number 4, p.552-559, by Anand, V. The results in this test showed a negative correlation between time spent playing video games and GPA and SAT scores. This means that as video game usage increases, GPA and SAT scores decreases. A chi-squared analysis found a p value for video game usage and GPA was greater than a 95% confidence level (0.005 < p < 0.01). This finding suggests that dependence exists. Chi-squared results were not significant when comparing time spent studying and an individual's SAT score. This study indicates that there is an association between playing video games and lower GPAs. http://digiplay.info/node/2799
Summary: of Data: According to the test done by Anand, V. the results show that the more hours spent playing videogames resulted in lower G.P.A and SAT scores, while limited gaming were associated with higher scores.
I have read and research several articles on the internet about tests that have been done relating to regular video game play and lower GPAs. I have yet to find and article or study that shows video game play relating to higher GPAs. This gives me strong evidence that my results will turn out the same and students who play video games regularly will have a lower average GPA than students who don’t.
