Statement

The Purpose of this study was to determine if there is a statistical difference between the number of social media accounts a person has per grade. We chose this topic because we thought it would be interesting to find if grade, and therefore age group, affects how a person uses social media. We hypothesized before the study that lower classmen would have more accounts, since they have been exposed to social media from a younger age.

ABSTRACT

Our topic of choice was whether there is a difference between number of social media accounts per person per grade. We chose this to see if different age groups use social media differently. The population of our study was North Olmsted High School, and we chose to sample 120 people, 30 from each grade. We got 90 surveys back, 26 from freshmen, 24 from sophmore, 21 from juniors and 19 from the seniors. This non-response bias made our sample smaller, and our study weaker. The survey asked for grade level, and then asked for the number of social media accounts a person has. We then sorted the data in Minitab into a qui squared table, with the columns labeled with grade level and the rows labeled 0-2, 3-5, 6+. Then, we ran the qui squared test of independence and found that there was no statistically significance difference between the number of social media accounts per person per grade. In order to obtain more accurate results, this study should be carried out with a larger population, and bigger sample size.
