Weaknesses : (
The main weakness in our study was that we did not receive all one hundred of our surveys back. This is due to students that did not fill out the survey correctly, for example, circling more than one genre. Also, some of our surveys were returned without being completed, an example on non-response bias because the student was no longer in the class or could not be found to be given the survey. As well as the fact that a few students attended Polaris or PSEOP full time. Also some extraneous factors that affected our study were that some students may not enjoy a specific genre, or enjoy movies at all. Also, some of the students surveyed may not have taken the survey seriously and therefore lied about their answer. For example, we saw this in a few surveys in which males chose genres such a musical or romance. Another weakness was we allowed for too many categories and many of them could've been grouped together so this caused some of our expected cell counts to be less than five. To correct this, we could have grouped the genres that are alike intially so that there were less categories to choose from on the survey itself. In order to fix this problem we had to group romance, romantic comedy, and drama all together into drama. We also had to group sci-fi,action, sports, into actions. The last grouping that occured was musical, romantic comedy, drama, romance, were all put together into drama. We could also use a larger number of students such as one hundred of each gender so that we hopefully would avoid having cell counts that were too small.
Extrapolation and Further Work
We could extrapolate our study to a broader population, such as all of Northeast Ohio, however, we would have to stratify based on age and limit the ages to fourteen to eighteen. We would have to do this because results could differ since adults and younger children most likely have different movie preferences than high school aged students. For this reason, we would only feel comfortable extrapolating to a larger population who are ages fourteen to eighteen such as all of the high schools in the area.
Further work in the area of our topic could be done by extrapolating to a population that surveyed a larger number of high school students and use of a survey that contained a fewer number of genres. This would allow the data to be more accurate and closer to the true preferences of students.
