We have always wondered how well the kids that are spending all their time on social media are doing in school and if there is a relationship between the two variables, for this reason we decided it would be good to test, because almost every kid can be included in the study and that way we could get the majority of our surveys back to us. From this study we want to show what the true correlation is between time spent on social media and the cumulative GPA of the students.
Based on the 9 step hypothesis test we determined that there is statistical evidence to confirm there is a correlation between time spent on social media and cumulative GPA based on the data we received back from our surveys, since we only received back 40 of the 70 surveys we sent out, there is a bit of a response bias for the data since those who did not fill out the survey weren’t taken into account for in the graphs and data.
R-squared is 9.8% and R was 27% this shows the slight negative linear relationship between the two variables. The regression line shows this relationship also. Our data was different from the study we found online in the background information in the fact the they said there was no correlation between the two variables in their study, whereas there was a relationship with our data. Although there wasnt a huge correlation between the two variables and the p value was barley less then the alpha value, this was enough to confirm there was a correlation.
